Works start on IKEA's first major UK development for 7 years

Construction has commenced on IKEA's latest store: IKEA Reading.  The new development is part of IKEA's wider UK expansion plan with a store that will serve customers between their existing stores in Bristol, Southampton and Wembley.

This substantial scheme, which in total measures approximately 5 hectares, includes a store in excess of 32,000sqm. On the adjacent site, a new multi-level car park gives space for approximately 1000 cars, while the surrounding highways network will undergo extensive improvements.

The development is progressing after years of collaborative design, respect for local planning requirements and a deep understanding of IKEA’s brand and ever evolving retail model. We are working with our partners in the industry, Rolton Group, Cunnington Clark, WYG, and construction managers RG Group, to enable IKEA to open their latest store to the public in summer 2016.

After many years working on this particular project, I am delighted to see construction progressing so well. This is a very tight site so design coordination and construction programme have been, and will remain, critical to the project’s success. I am enjoying the challenge!
